Are too many dancers living in poverty?
#ThoughtfulThursdaySW In tangent with the release of his new song "Groceries", Chance The Rapper created a competition looking for the best 10 dance videos to his new song with the reward of free groceries for a year!
To find out more about the competition see article link below.
While this seems like a fun opportunity for dancers, it does speak to a sad reality within the dance community: that many dancers do not have the money to even afford groceries.
A Yvonne Chow, the Director of Operations at H+ (an organization providing free groceries for dancers in NYC), stated in a recent Dance Magazine article,
"Dancers will forego eating to take classes... So we're trying to not make this such a burden for them. And recognize that there's a whole community of people that are going through it."
While artists choose a dance career because they love the art form, the do not choose the poverty that comes with it. The strain of not knowing where your next paycheck will come from, having to dance for free or not able to afford life necessities such as food are major issues within our industry today.
So what can we do? If you have the means, you can donate to organizations like H+ credited in the dance magazine article. You can also call your local dance companies and demand better / fair pay for their dancers.
It is critical as dance organizations that we stop seeing dancers as free labor and instead, pay the artist fairly or do not operate at all.
We are proud at SkunkWorks Dance to offer fair wages to all of our staff. We understand the importance of supporting our team behind our incredible art.
Do you think there needs to be change within how the dance industry treats / pays the artists within? How do you think we could impact industry change? We want to hear from you! Comment below or send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org!
